The Caribbean Region The Caribbean region is located in the north of the country, bordering the Caribbean Sea and Venezuela. It is composed of eight departments which are: Cesar, San Andrés and Providencia, Sucre, Atlántico, Bolívar, Córdoba, Magdalena and La Guajira. The most important cities are: Cartagena de Indias, Santa Marta, Barranquilla, Riohacha, Sincelejo and Montería. The climate of the Caribbean Region is generally warm within the category of tropical climate, however, it has some areas that escape this characteristic, especially the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. In the department of La Guajira there are some semi-desert areas. In this region a broken relief predominates that often acquires the form of low mountains, since, its average height does not exceed 300 meters above sea level.
